Research Notes

Death. A prior version of this profile reported she died "5 Oct 1648 in Cambridge, Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts." This claim lacked a reliable source; it has been removed from the profile.

She is widely attributed as being Margaret Taft, daughter of Nicholas Taft and his wife, Margaret (Milner) Taft, who was married at St. Dunstans, Stepney, London, England on May 24, 1643 to John Jackson. This identification, however, has not been proven and is disputed.

Margaret Taft, daughter of Nicholas and Margaret Taft, was born 18 Mar 1618 and her baptism on 25 Mar 1617 recorded at Saint Dunstan's Church, in Stepney, London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The gravestone of Margaret wife of John Jackson, who settled in Newton, indicates she was born circa 1624, clearly contrasting with the date of birth for Margaret Taft (18 Mar 1618).

Margaret Taft was married at London on 24 May 1643 to John Jackson Source: London, England, Extracted Church of England Parish Records, 24 May 1643, Jackson, John & Taft, Margt, Book 24 Collection London: - Calendar of Marriage Licence Allegations, 1597-1648. It has not been proven, however, that this same-named couple is identical with the couple who settled in the village of Newton in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Her death as "5 Oct 1648 in Cambridge, Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts" lacks a reliable source. I am working to remove that information from the profile. Will create a related research note. --Gene
