Jean was born in 1841. She is the daughter of James Tait and Margaret. In the 1851 census, she is living with her father James, mother Margaret, and siblings Elizabeth, James and Margaret. Her father was a slate quarrier.

Research Notes

Father is most likely to be James Nicol Tait (rather than John Nicol Tait), baptised in Taquair, Peebles in 1803.
