Biography

Andrew was born in 1839. He was the son of William Tait and Mary Johnston. He passed away in 1934. [1]

On June 26, 1839, Andrew was born in Scotland. [2] Possibly in Dalbeattie.

Some records had his middle name as David while the 1901 and 1911 Censuses had his middle initial as "J". There was no middle name on his death registration.

In 1848, the Tait family left Scotland and sailed to New York City. They travelled on the Erie Canal to Buffalo.

In 1863, Andrew married Aurilla House.

The 1871 Village of Orillia Census recorded Andrew Tait, age 32, a shingle manufacturer born in Scotland, with his wife Aurilla, 30, German and born in Ontario, and their children Albertha, 6, Alma, 4, and Orland, 2, all born in Ontario and all Wesleyan Methodists. Ellen Berry, 21, was their servant.

The 1881 Town of Orillia Census recorded Andrew Tait, age 41, a lumberman born in Scotland, Canadian Methodist, with his wife Aurilla, 40, Alma J., 14, “Clau.. C.”, 8, Orville D., 6, Alberta, 4, and “Orma …”, 2, the remainder born in Ontario.

The 1891 Town of Orillia Census recorded Andrew Tait, age 52, a lumberman born in Scotland, with his wife “Aurillia”, 50, and their children Alma, 24, Clarice, 19, Orville, 16, Alberta, 14, and Orma, 12, the remainder born in Ontario and all Methodist.

The 1901 Town of Orillia Census recorded Andrew “J” Tait, age 61, a lumber man born on June 26, 1839 in Scotland, immigrated in 1848, with his wife Aurilla, 59, born May 24, 1841, and their children Alberta E., 23, born on March 23, 1878, and Orma, 22, born November 3, 1879, and Clarice A. Sidney, 28, born on June 2, 1872 with her husband, age 31, a lumber man born on December 29, 1869, the remainder born in Ontario and all Methodist. They had a domestic.

The 1911 Orillia Census recorded Andrew “J.” Tait, age 72, a lumber and shingle manufacturer born in June, 1838 in Scotland, immigrated in 1848, with his wife “Aurillia”, 69, born in June, 1841, and their daughter Orma H., 32, born in November, 1878, the remainder born in Ontario and living on Colborne Street, and all Methodist.

The 1921 Toronto Census recorded Andrew Tait at 15 Bedford Road, age 80, immigrated in 1861, with his wife Aurilla, 80, both Methodist.

On October 17, 1935, Andrew died at 96 his residence at 15 Bedford Road in Toronto. He was a retired lumber merchant. O.D. Tait, his son, was the informant. [3] Andrew was buried in St. Andrew’s-St. James’ Cemetery in Orillia.
