Biography

Robert Talbot was born about 1608, presumably in Ireland. He was the son of Sir William Talbot and Alison Netterville. Robert was the 2nd Baronet of Carlton, succeeding his father.

Robert married Grace, the daughter of George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore and founder of the Maryland Colony, and his wife, Anne Mynne. They resided at Castlesallagh, County Wicklow, where Robert represented the county in Irish parliament of 1634, but was later expelled. They remained Roman Catholics after the Reformation and after the outbreak of the Irish Rebellion of 1641, he joined the Irish Catholic Confederates.

Children:

  1. Sir William Talbot, 3rd Baronet; d.s.p.
  2. Frances Talbot, d. 1718; m. her cousin, Richard Talbot (d. 1703); ancestors of the present Lord Talbot de Malehide of London.
  3. Mary Talbot

The Maryland Historical Magazine also states that George Talbot of Maryland was their son.[1] Other sources say Robert had only a daughter, Frances, and that Robert was succeeded by his nephew, William Talbot, son of Gerald Talbot.[2]

On 17 Nov 1654, a petition of Lady Grace Talbot, wife of Sir Robert Talbot, of Malahide, states that they had five children. Lady Grace was requesting "a subsistence for her and her five children out of her estate in the county of Wicklow (alledged to be 1700 acres), or otherwise out of her husband's estate in Meath..." [3] [4]

The exact date of Robert's death is unknown. He was still alive in April 1669, when the King thought his petition to recover his lands was "reasonable."[5]

Sir Robert Talbot Bt. was the eldest son of Sir William Talbot of Carton, Co. Kildare he married Grace Calvert and had 4 children, William who succeed him married Anne nee Nugent the widow of Luke Dillon 6th Viscount Dillon and dsp, Elizabeth who married James Nugent of Coolamber, George who married Sarah Crofton of Longford Co Sligo, Frances who married Sir Richard Talbot of Malahide I have not been able to identify the fourth child. The "Lord Richard Talbot born West River,Anne Arundel, Maryland" can not be a son of this Sir Robert Talbot, who was living in Talbotstown Co Wicklow with his wife in 1630.
