DEPARTURES.
The Earl of Shrewsbury, from his seat, Heythrop, Oxfordshire, for Alton Abbey, Staffordshire;
English Chronicle and Whitehall Evening Post, 26 February 1831 page 3. findmypast
On Thursday morning, at two o’clock, a fire broke out in the mansion of the Earl of Shrewsbury, at Heythrop, Oxforshire, which after raging with intense fury for many hours, and in defiance of all efforts to subdue it by the house engines on the spot, completely demolished every part of the interior of the building, leaving nothing but the bare walls. This mansion was built in the year 1705, by the celebrated Nobleman of that day, the Duke of Shrewsbury. ... Of late year the Duke of Beaufort has rented the mansion, and kept up the Oxford hunt from it in an unequalled style of spirit and accommodation.... The fire originated in one of the upper bed-rooms, where bed clothes had been placed to air, in the expectation of the arrival of the Noble Duke and his family, which had been delayed in consequence of the sudden death of his Grace’s brother, Lord C. Somerset, at Brighton.
