Ossie was born on 6 October 1909 in Burma. His father George was 29 and his mother Ruby was 22. [1]

His sister-in-law Stella tells the story of Ossie: Ossie was a train driver in Burma before World War II and the invasion by the Japanese. He took a train in with many of his family members from their home to the north of Burma. His wife Winnie was missing and left behind. He drove the train back down south again find the missing family members but his train was then commandeered by the Chinese, piled up with all their equipment and he was told to take them to China as there was a branch line to China. Ossie turned the train down that branch line towards China a little way, put the throttle up and raced the train along then jumped the train with his engineer. He didn't manage to locate Winnie and she spent the war in a Prisoner of War camp in Burma. She had a young baby with her and that baby died in the camp.[2]

Ossie then trekked north from Burma to India in 1942 to escape the Japanese invasion. He arrived on 9 June 1942 in India from his Burmese residence at Railways Quarters, Kanbalu where he was employed by Burma Railways. He was sent to live at The Ashram (YWCA) 5 Barrow Road, Lall Bagh, Lucknow, where his mother and siblings were living.[3] His mother and sisters had arrive at The Ashram on 21 April as they traveled by plane, while Ossie walked there.

After the war he returned to Burma to find his wife Winnie. She was the only family member that had been left behind. He found her then returned to Lucknow and then on to England.[2]

In 1972 Ossie was an engine driver.

He married Winifred Gertrude Britto. They had 3 sons and 3 daughters.
