Biography

Robert Tailboys, Knt.; de jure Lord Kyme; Knight of the Shire for Lincolnshire; Sheriff of Lincolnshire

Family

Robert Tailboys, knight, de jure Lord Kyme, was the second son of William Tailboys and Elizabeth Bonville.[1][2][3] He was born sometime between 1441 and 1451 (aged 40 and more in 1491).[1][4]

His father had rebelled against Edward IV and was attainted by an act of Parliament 4 Nov 1461.[5] This attainder was reversed in 1472 and Robert had livery of his father's estates by 12 Edward III.[1][6][7]

Positions Held

Robert was a Knight of the Shire for Lincolnshire from 1472-1475, and again in 1478.[1][3]

He was knighted in 1478, during his second parliament.[3]

During 1480-1481 he served as Sheriff of Lincolnshire..[1][8][9]

In 1488 he was admitted to membership in the Corpus Christi Guild at Boston, Lincolnshire.[1][10] During this time guilds were religious societies organized to promote honest business practices, in return for which guild members pledged to pray for their deceased members souls in order to shorten their time in purgatory.[11] Boston had a number of such guilds but the Corpus Christi Guild was known, in particular, as being a group of high-ranking men and women who had the wealth to build chapels and hire priests to offer daily prayers for them.[11]

Marriage and Children

Robert married, sometime before 1467, Elizabeth Heron, daughter of John Heron, Knt. of Ford and Chillingham, Northumberland and Elizabeth Heron (daughter and heiress of William Heron).[1][3][4] There were at least seven children from this marriage:

Death

Robert died 30 Jan 1494/5.[3][18][19][20] He was buried at Kyme Priory, Lincolnshire, beside his wife who had predeceased him. [1][3]

His will, dated 16 Nov 1494, was proved 19 Jun 1495.[1][3][9] In it he mentioned the intended marriage of his son George, his heir, to Elizabeth Gascoigne.[21][22] He bequeathed the manor of Faldingworth, the advowson of the church and the manor of Rothingham (in Lancashire) to his second son, William, for his lifetime.[9][21][22] The manors of Kyme, Newton, Hornington, and Oxton (in York) were to be settled on his son Robert for his lifetime,[21][22] and additional smaller bequests were made to his sons John and Richard and to his daughters.[22]

Robert Tailboys is in a project-approved/badged trail (reviewed January 2015 by a Magna Carta project member) from Gateway Ancestor George Reade to Magna Carta Surety Barons John de Lacy. The Lacy trail branches off into badged trails to Saher de Quincy, Gilbert de Clare, Richard de Clare, William d'Aubigny, and Robert de Ros. These trails are set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of the Gateway's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

Sir Robert was restored in blood in 1472, and at his death in 1495 was recorded to have held the manor of Hurworth and the advowson of the church and rent from the manor of Neasham.

His son and heir George, aged twenty-four at that time, was made a knight at the battle of Blackheath in 1497, but about a year later was found to be a lunatic. He must have recovered, for in 1499 he obtained pardon for any intrusions made upon the manor and vill of Hurworth. In 1512 he had licence to alienate the manor of Sotby, and made his will 18 January 1512–13, after this he joined the expedition to France with a retinue of twenty-five men. In 1517 he was again a lunatic, and appears to have remained insane to the end of his life, about twenty years later.

At the Durham inquisition in 1539 it was found that he had held Hurworth; the heir was his grandson George, Lord Tailbois, aged sixteen years, being son of Gilbert, Lord Tailbois, son of George.

Hi Tanya,

Thanks for your interest in this profile. The reversal of the attainder is already mentioned in the 'Family' section above, and supported with multiple citations. The source you have given is already cited in the bio as well. Information about his son belongs more appropriately on his son's profile.

HI Jen,

My brain works differently. I did not "see" an actual link to this info, so others could read this. But then I did not click on all those links to see which one leads to this info. Thanks! Tanya
