Family Story

This floats on Ancestry. I've copied it and put it in it's entirety.

“Watching for Pa”

This is a story told to me by my aunt Amanda Grant over the phone. Technical information was sent to me by Amanda about the family. This Civil War story, however, is recorded simply from Amanda’s memory and mine.

Suzanne Hope Butler Anderson

George Jefferson Pate, called Jeff, and Sarah Emily Talton, called Emily, were married around 1860 and had one daughter before Jeff left to fight with the Confederate army. Although they had five more children after his return, he never recovered from the effects of wounds received during the Civil War and died at the age of 42. Jeff and Emily Pate were Sarah Julia Pate’s parents, and this is a story about her oldest sister Georgia Ann Pate, called Georgie.

Shortly after Georgie was born, her father Jeff Pate left to fight in the Civil War. Pictures at that time were uncommon, and Emily did not have one of her husband in the house. Georgie grew to the age of four with only stories of her father. Georgie was anxious for her Pa to return.

One day Georgie ran out of the house, and pirched (sic) herself on the gatepost in front of the Pate house. It was a hot and humid day, and after an hour or so, her Mamma wanted her to come in the house. “Come in child, you’ll get a sunstroke sitting out there on such a hot day!” her Mamma said. “But I’m waiting for Pa!” Georgie replied. “Oh lordy she’s been out there too long already” thought Emily, for they had recieved (sic) no word that her husband would be returning. “Now Georgie, you quit being silly now and get in this house!” But Georgie would not budge. She kept insisting that her Pa was comming (sic) home that day, so Emily put a hat on her so she wouldn’t get sunburned, and let her stay.

Georgie sat on that post all afternoon. Her Mamma kept an eye on her through the window, afraid her daughter might faint any minute and fall off and break her neck. Finally, Georgie jumped off the gatepost and started running down the road. Emily couldn’t imagine what was happening now, so she ran outside after her daughter. Georgie ran on ahead, and around the bend came a Confederate soldier. Sure enough, it was Jeff Pate, Georgie’s Pa.
