Research Notes

Author M.J. Tracy, in Historical sketches of the Tracy and Tanner families.[7] states that "Lewis Tanner, who settled in Mecklinburg County, Virginia, not far from 1730 or 1740, . .. It is shown by the records that his deed for his homestead was recorded in 1750," The author claims he married Margaret Haskins and they had two sons: Thomas Tanner and Josiah Tanner. Lucias is not mentoned as a son. The dates of birth and of marriage for Thomas (b. 1723/28) and Josiah (b. 1759, m. 1771) are somewhat at odds with the parents' birth and marriage dates.

Previously, Josiah Tanner's biography stated that Josiah's parents were Matthew Tanner and Lucy Creed. Matthew's Will does name as one of his son's Josiah Tanner.[8] Consideration should be given to removing Josiah as a chlid.
