Mary was born in 1867. She is the daughter of James Tanner and Gertrude Hingston.[1]
UK Census Date 1871: Living with her parents, three siblings and two servants in Cheddar, Somersetshire, England. Aged 3.
At the age of 13 Mary emigrated from England to New Zealand with her parents and five siblings. They travelled on the Lady Jocelyn, departing London on 27 September 1880 and arriving into Tauranga on 2 January 1881.[2]
The Tanner family were among the first settlers to Te Puke, about 30 minutes out of Tauranga.
Mary married Joseph Lawry Vercoe (son of Henry Walter Vercoe and Amelia Cooper) on 6 April 1895. They had about 9 children.
Her husband passed away in 1934.
Mary passed away in 1940 at the age of 73.
