Genealogical Records

Death Records

  • Primary Source, (burial); Tertiary Source (biography), Find A Grave Index [1] Data Summary:
  1. ) Find A Grave: Memorial #41791791: Sarah (Tanner) Gardiner was born 21 May 1776 and she died 12 Jan 1826 (aged 49).
    1. ) Marriage. Sarah Tanner married Gould Gardiner (1774–1843)
    2. ) Children:
      1. ) William H. Gardiner (1798–1863)
      2. ) Joseph Wanton Gardiner (1799–1881)
      3. ) Cornelia Gardiner (1802–1869)
      4. ) Sarah Ann Gardner Lawton (1804–1887)
      5. ) Susan Gardiner (1807–1861)
      6. ) Mary Gardiner (1812–1885)
  2. ) BURIAL. Sarah (Tanner) Gardiner was buried in the Elm Grove Cemetery at North Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island, USA; PLOT 085.
    1. ) Tombstone Inscription, " SARAH, wife of Gould Gardiner, Died Jan. 12, 1826. In her 50. year."
  3. ) {Editorial Note: The tombstone data for Sarah (Tanner) Gardner, results in a 1776 date of birth for Sarah Tanner. However, the North Kingstown, RI. Vital record for the children of Benjamin Tanner does not have a child born in 1776, but there is a 21 May 1771 date of birth entry in the Vital Record which cannot be associated with any other of Benjamin Tanners's children, which by process of elimination must belong to his daughter Sarah. The Gardiner Genealogy places the date of birth for her husband Gould Gardiner at 17 Oct 1772. A reasonable explanation for this date of birth disparity is that the age of "50 year" noted on her tombstone, which by the Vital Record is analysis should have been 55, was a rounded down number, this is somewhat supported by a similar situation in the tombstone data of her husband, Gould Gardiner}

Death of daughter Mary:

  • Primary Source, Rhode Island Deaths and Burials, 1802-1950 [2] Data Extract:
  1. ) Rhode Island Deaths: Mary Greene Gardiner, daughter of Gould and Sarah (Tanner) Gardiner, died on 12 June 1885 at Exeter, Washington County, Rhode Island, at the age of 74.

The last will and testament of Sarah (Aylesworth) Tanner, wife of Benjamin establishes their daughter Sarah Tanner was the wife of Gould Gardiner; and an analysis of the Rhode Island Vital Records affirms that she was born 27 March 1773. } She was born in 1767 (1776?) and died 12 January 1826. Research Notes

  1. ) 26 Feb 2019. The calculated date of birth of 1776 from the tombstone data for Sarah (Tanner) Gardiner does not fit with the analysis of the Vital Records for the birth dates for the children of Benjamin Tanner.
