Military Service and Death

During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company B of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was 26 years old, married and working as a mechanic when he enlisted on 14 July 1863 in Southbridge, Massachusetts. Killed in camp on 15 July 1864 by shelling.[1] A (graphic) description of his death is given by Sergeant Samuel Valentine in a personal letter quoted in his profile's Military Service section.
