Biography

Frank Barrett Tanner was the son of John Tanner and Louisa Barrett, his second wife. He was born in Clifton, Gloucestershire, in 1852.[1]

Before his first birthday, his family immigrated to Australia. Together with his parents, grandmother, two sisters and three brothers, he departed Bristol on the ship Mary Ann in November 1852 and arrived in Melbourne in April 1853.[2][3]

Tanner--which sad event took place on Friday last at Romsey--we are sure that all who were acquainted with the deceased and his relations feel a sympathy akin to ours. As is very generally known, he was son-in-law of Mr. Sidney Seymour, and brother of Mr. Harcourt Tanner, both of this town. For some months previous to his death Mr. Tanner suffered from cancer, which, in spite of the best medical care obtainable in the colony, gradually increased its hold until on Friday last hemorrhage occurred, and took the life of the victim at about half-past 6 p.m. When the news was circulated a gloom was cast over the neighbourhood, and, although it was known to be the opinion of Mr. Tanner's medical advisers that his complaint was incurable, sincere sympathy for the bereaved wife and mother was expressed upon all sides. The funeral, which took place on Saturday, was one of the largest that has ever taken place in this district, thus affording an evidence of the respect and esteem felt for the deceased and the family of which he was a member. He has left a widow and one child in comfortable circumstances."
