Uk Census 1851 has William, an Agrigcultural Labourer, aged 46, his wife Ann, aged 35, children
William, aged 14 an agricultural labourer, Elizabeth aged 11, Harriet aged 7, Lazarus aged 3, and
Stephen 6 months living at Compton Dunden, Somerset. Also in the same residence (33) are lodgers
Ann Wright, widow aged 30, Sarah Gadfey (?) aged 10 and Thomas Wright 3 months.
William Tanner died 3 days after his wife Ann. Death certificates indicate both were suffering from flulike
symptons at the time
William's Death Certficate states:

Birth Place: 'Ashcot' Somersetshire, England.
Father and Mother '_____'.
The informant was the deceased's grandson, Edgar Tanner of Cowies Creek.
William and his wife Ann nee Martin arrived in Geelong with five of their children on the 'Maria Hay' on
17 August 1855 which sailed from Southampton, England (from Victorian State Archives - Source:
PROV, VPRS 14, Register of Assisted Immigrants from the United Kindom (refer to microform copy,
VPRS 3502) Doc in file). The Maria Hay sailed from Southampton, England.
William age 46. Agricultural labourer from Somerset. Church of England. Could read and write.
Wife Ann, 42, could read and write.
Daughter Elizabeth, 14, domestic servant, could read.
Harriet, 11, could read.
Lazarus, 7, could read.
Stephen, 4.
Eleanor, 2.
Maria Hay, 600 Tons. Departed Southampton 16 May 1855 and took 93 days to arrive
William Tanner and his daughter Elizabeth were engaged (employed) by H.Phillips, Priory, Newtown
(Geelong) on 24 September. The Priory was originally the home of James Austin, Geelong pioneer,
who in 1853 had returned to England to live.
From Family Search in 2001: William Tanner listed as B: 16 Jan 1795 at Compton, Dunden, Glastonbury.
D: 21 Aug 1888, M: 2 Apr 1833, Comptun Dunden, Glastonbury. The death details match, but not birth
details as per Family Notes and Certificates on hand.
