Ebenezer Frank Tanton was born on 26 September 1894 in West Hougham, Kent, England, UK. He is the son of Ernest Henry Walter Tanton and his wife Mary Clark. His birth was registered in Dover, Kent, England, UK. [1]
In 1898 the family home, Apsley House, caught fire, destroying one third of it. [2]
On the 1901 England, Wales and Scotland Census Ebenezer was 6 and living in Aspley House, the home of his widowed grandmother, Susan Tanton, in West Hougham, Kent, England, UK. Also living there were his parents Ernest W Tanton (35) and Mary B Tanton (38), who worked as millers and bakers, and Ebenezer's siblings Ernest M (11), Benjamin C (9), Henry B (7), Elsie M (5) and Edward C (2). Ebenezer, Ernest, Benjamin and Elsie all attended school. The family also employed a 15 year old servant, Bessie Palmer. Ebenezer's mother was born in Australia. [3]
On the 1911 Census Ebenezer was 16 and worked as a farm labourer. He still lived at Apsley House with his parents Ernest (46) and Mary (48), and siblings Benjamin (19), Henry (17), Elsie (15), Edward (12) and Leonard 5. Ebenezer's father owned a flour mill and worked as a corn miller and baker. His brother Benjamin was a corn miller and Henry was a baker. Their home had 7 rooms. [4]
Ebenezer continued working on his father's farm until he enlisted in the Buff's (East Kent Regiment, 6th Battalion, Service Number 200593) on the 1st September 1914. He served in the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 9 Sept 1917 until he passed away at number 55 Casualty Clearing Station on 25 November 1917, following wounds he received at Cambrai. [5] He was buried at Tincourt New British Cemetery, France. [6] [7].
