Sarah Sophronia Taplin was born in 1851 in Indiana to Minard Taplin and Elizabeth Plant.
In 1860, eight year old Sarah lived in Marshall, Indiana. Her father Minard (44) was a carpenter. He was from Vermont while her mother Elizabeth (44) was from England. Her siblings were Emily A (17), Mary J (15), James E (12), John M (5) and William M (3). Sarah was the first in her family to be born in Indiana as her elder siblings were born in Ohio[1].
Sarah married Joseph McCormack on 1 Jan 1867 in Marshall, Indiana[2].

Joseph and Sarah moved to Cook, Illinois before 1870. In 1870, they lived in Hyde Park. Joseph was twenty seven and a gardener while Sarah was nineteen and kept the house. They had two daughters by now, two year old Nelly and baby Bertha[3].
