Biography

Edmund Tapp was born about 1592 in Felmersham, Bedfordshire, England to Edmund Tapp (1550-1635) and Margaret (Unknown) (1550-1639).^[1] He married Ann (Unknown) by 1612 based on the date of the baptism of his first child in Great Haddam, Hertfordshire, England.^[1] He set sail with his wife and children on 31 May 1637 and arrived on 31 Jul 1637 and settled first in New Haven.^[1][2][3] He died before 1 Apr 1653 in Milford, New Haven, Connecticut when his will was proved.^[1] Edmund Tapp has a burial monument or cenotaph in the Milford Cemetery, Milford, New Haven, Connecticut. Edmund Tapp was one of the five who received the deed to Milford on February 12, 1639, and his home lot was #35 (consisting of 7 acres, 2 rods) located at the present corner of Governors Avenue and North Street.^[5] The prefix of "Mr." was added to his name.^[5] Edmund was chosen as one of four judges in Milford to hold offices for one year until a body of laws was established. Until such time as the laws could be written they "were to observe and apply themselves to the rules of the written word of God."^[5] He was referred to as a Pillar of the First Church of Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut, which he helped organize.^[6] He took part in the ordination of Rev. Peter Prudden, and was sent as a Deputy to the General Court of New Haven.^[5]

According to the latest research by Craig Partridge, Ph.D. in "The English Origins of Edmund Tapp of New Haven and Milford, Connecticut" in The American Genealogist the parents Edmund Tapp (1592-1653) are Edmund Tapp (c.1550 - 1635) and Margaret (Unknown) (c 1550 - 1639).^[1] His father was born about 1550 in Felmersham, Bedfordshire, England. He was the son of Robert Tapp (1515-) and his mother is unknown.^[1] Edmund attended Caius College in Cambridgshire in 1568 when he was 18.^[1] He married about 1585 to Margaret (Unknown).^[1] The widow Margaret Tapp was buried at Chellington in Bedfordshire on 26 Apr 1639. She left a Will which mentioned her daughter Agnes Welles as well as Agnes’ husband and children.^[1]

The “old man” Tapp, was buried at Bennignton in Hertfordshire on 2 May 1635, where the record list’s “1635 - Edmundus Tappe senex (old man) sepult: May 2nd.”^[1] His estate was administered on 28 May 1635, and given to his son Edmund Tapp.^[1]

Edmund Tapp and Margaret (Uknown) had three children.
