Biography

Joel was born in 1814, and he was not the man of the same name born in the same county in 1816. In the 1870 census Joel's grandson [[Tarleton-269|James Robert Tarleton was living in the household.

Michael Crawford lived four doors from Joel Tarleton in 1870 in Anson Co, NC and is most likely the unknown Crawford, who fathered Joel's grandson James Robert Tarleton, based on yDNA testing of his great grandson James Tarleton. James Robert Tarleton was born about 1861 and lived with his grandparents in 1870 and 1880 after the apparent death of his mother.

In 1866 Joel Talton paid taxes on cotton with an 1866 value of $843. Using a standard value/inflation calculator means that Joel paid taxes on the equivalent value of $14,500 worth of cotton -- a little over a year after the Civil War ended. In the 1870 census his real estate was listed with a value of $250, personal estate at $160 (roughly $4,300 and $2,800 in 2021 dollars).

Joel Tarlton is likely the son of Abner Tarlton although no records or other documentation have been found. Evidence shows all these families of Tarltons-Tarletons are in the Anson County census and Joel Tarlton being of the right age to be a son. Should anyone find proof or non-proof that Joel Talrton is a son of Abner, please let me know. They can always be detached if they are not related. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Talton-96
