Joyce is doing an outstanding job of tracing back from Tarlings in north America to their UK (mostly England) origins, and this is no exception, so at the UK end there is not a lot I can add. Arthur Tarling did not change his year of birth as he crossed the atlantic - as happened with some others! So his birth is registered in the quarter ending March 1867 in the Tewkesbury Registration District in Gloucestershire - which included the small village of Elmstone Hardwicke. He was baptized on 10 March 1867, son of William and Jane Tarling. William Tarling and Jane Williams married on 14 Apr 1859 in Bishop's Cleeve - a slightly larger village close to Elmstone Hardwicke. This area is the cradle of the western origin of the surname Tarling. In the 03 Apr 1881 census in England, Arthur Tarling, age 14 is a Farm Servant on a farm on the outskirts of Tewkesbury; and he was born in the village of Elmstone Hardwick [sic]. And since he was in Canada by 1891 I wonder whether he might be the A. Tarling age 21 on the Dominion Line S.S. Ontario that sailed from Bristol (England) to Quebec(k), Montreal arriving 19 Jun 1888. That A. Tarling would have been born around 1867, so fits the bill.
