Birth certificate: 20 November 1857 at Boyd Mill, Corsham, Wiltshire UK; Sarah Jane, a girl, daughter of Thomas TARLING, a Miller and Mary Ann TARLING formerly UZZELL. Note: I think the place was actually Byde Mill in Corsham.
In the 07 April 1861 census at Byde Mill in Corsham are Thomas TARLING age 30, a Journeyman Miller born South Serny [sic - it is South Cerney] in Gloucestershire; along with his wife Mary Ann age 28 born Christian Malford, Wiltshire, and their children William J. age 8 born Seagry, Wiltshire; and also Sarah Ann [sic - surely this is Sarah Jane] age 3, and Ellen age 1, both born Corsham.
Sarah Jane TARLING did have a son William Henry born 14 Dec 1880 and the birth certificate has nothing written under the details of the father. However I have researched and I suspect that the father was Nathaniel Goddard. To summarise a long trail:
I am fairly sure that William Henry Tarling born 14 Dec 1880 and son of Sarah Jane was exactly the same person as the Henry Walter Tarling who married 14 Oct 1905 - all the details match and there is no alternative. On that marriage certificate his father originally had "Nathaniel" written in, but that is crossed out and the details of his grandfather, who brought him up, Thomas Tarling (deceased), Miller, are inserted.
I pondered on this and wondered whether Nathaniel was really his father - but that he realised that it would be embarrassing if his father's surname was different from his (whereas if his mother was Sarah Tarling - presumably there at the wedding - and his father was named as Thomas Tarling (deceased), then not an eyebrow would be raised).
Now Nathaniel was not a common forename, people didn't move around much at the time of his birth and there was a census on 03 Apr 1881. So I searched for any Nathaniels of an appropriate age and living in Wiltshire at the time of the 1881 census, and there was one possibility which looked far more likely than any of the others: Nathaniel Goddard age 28 living in Devizes, a town just 5 miles from Calne.
So I took a look at Nathaniel Goddard. He was a Coachman (Domestic) - certainly a man who travelled around the area and would presumably visit (or be based at) such places as had Domestic Servants like Sarah Jane Tarling. He was married and hence would not have been able to marry Sarah Jane. William Henry was born 14 Dec 1880, so conceived say early March 1880. In this 1881 census of the Goddard family the youngest child, Elizabeth Goddard was 9 months old (on 05 Apr 1881), so born between 06 Jul 1880 and 05 Aug 1880. So I assume that Nathaniel Goddard's wife Harriet was about 6 months pregnant when William Henry Tarling was conceived. Now this is all guesswork and supposition but I think it fits together. Needless to say this would probably be confirmed or not by a modern autosomal DNA test on any descendant of William Henry Tarling.
I can't be sure which is the 1891 census entry for Sarah Jane TARLING - she was a servant, away from home and details of such people are often not accurate - their age may be exaggerated in the hope of getting better pay and their place of birth may just be the best the head of household knows. The best possibility I can see is: RG12/750/128/66 in Folkstone in the household of Harry C. Morse (Colonel Bombay Staff Corps): Sarah Tarling, servant, single, age 29, Nurse, born Wiltshire. Her son William Henry is listed as Henry in the 1891 census age 10, grandson of Thomas TARLING.
In Calne Parish Church on 22 June 1898 Sarah Jane TARLING a spinster (who had rounded down her age to 38) and whose father was Thomas TARLING, a Miller, married Charles James RANDALL a 28 year old Stableman. As we see above: in the 31 March 1901 census Sarah J. RANDALL and her husband and her father Thomas TARLING are living in Quemerford, Calne, Wiltshire UK.
In 1911 the family are in Chippenham and Sarah Jane Randall gives her age as 50. I cannot be sure without buying the certificate but I suspect her death is that registered Oct-Dec 1917 of Sarah J. Randall age 56 in Chippenham Registration District.
