Biography

Jonathan was born in 1843 in Harrison County, Virginia (to become West Virginia in 1863), the son of Hugh Tate and Elizabeth Fitz Randolph. He grew up on the family farm in Doddridge County. In October 1862 at age 19, he joined the Union Army to serve in the Civil War as a private in Co. E of the 3rd West Virginia Cavalry. He suffered a fall in December and spent much of 1863 in the hospital in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He was well enough in September 1863 to marry Salina Stark in Doddridge County. Jonathan returned to active duty at the end of the year, but then went absent without leave from April 1864 to February 1865, when he was arrested as a deserter and returned to his unit. He spent the next couple of months in hospitals in Baltimore, Maryland, and mustered out in June of 1865. The couple settled to farm in Doddridge County and had eight children together, one of whom died young. In the mid 1880s, the family moved to the Haydentown area in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The family had a checkered history there with various shootings, including Jonathan being shot by one of his sons, as well as being convicted of rape in 1890 with a nine-year sentence. A couple of his sons also served prison time. Jonathan's wife Salina died in 1911, and Jonathan followed three years later, dying near Haydentown in 1914. He is buried with his wife in Lowe Cemetery in Sulfur Springs outside of Haydentown.

William P. Tate, a wayward youth, living in the mountain above Fairchance, is in jail at Uniontown for attempting to kill his father, Jonathan Tate. They have had trouble for some time. The father undertook to chastise the son for driving away and selling one of the cows. The son resisted and fired a 32-calibre revolver at his parent, the bullet entering the chin and passing through the cheek. Without stopping to see how badly his parent was injured, the young fellow hastened to the nearest justice's office and began prosecution of this father for assault and battery. The latter was arrested and gave bail. He then prosecuted the son and the latter was brought to jail.

Handcuffs Wouldn't Hold Him
On last Saturday night Constable Williams of Fairchance, went to the house of Jonathan Tate, near Haydentown, to arrest him on complaint made by James Swaney. Williams found Tate, and after a struggle succeeded in handcuffing him. The wily Tate thereupon feigned illness and laid down. Williams not being able to carry him man started for assistance and when he returned his bird had flown handcuffs and all, and up to this time has not recaptured. Tate was shot in the face last week by his son, who is now in jail. Some of the neighbors sympathized with the son too strongly to suit the old gentleman, and he threatened to shoot Swaney and to burn him out. He also threatened to shoot two of John Swaney's children.

The Courier (Connellsville, PA), 17 Jan 1903, p. 1; accessed at newspapers.com, 4 Jun 2020. Notes Jonathan F. Tate as one of three Democratic candidates for the District No. 2 Road Supervisor in local elections in German township.
