Personal and Family Life

Henry Tate was born on 11 Mar 1819 at Chorley, in Lancashire, England, son of the Rev William Tate, a Unitarian minister. He was christened on 18 Mar 1819 at the Unitarian Church, Chorley, Lancashire, England.

On 1 Mar 1841 he married Jane Wignall, daughter of John Wignall of Aughton. They married at Liverpool and in the 1841 census were living in Dale St in Liverpool. Henry was a grocer.

By 1851, Henry had moved to Woodchurch Rd, Oxton, Cheshire. Henry was a tea merchant and the children present at home were Ellen (Mary Ellen), Alfred, Edwin and Caleb. Henry's sister in law, Mary Wignall was also living with them.

By 1861, the family had moved back to Walton in Lancashire. Henry was now a sugar refiner, and had 5 sons (Alfred, Edwin, Caleb, Henry and George) and two daughters (Isolina and Agnes) living at home.

In 1871, Henry is living at his home in Woolton Park, Much Woolton in Lancashire. Henry is a Sugar Refiner Master employing 92 men. His sons Alfred and Edwin were living with him and listed Sugar Refiner partners. Other children present in the home were Caleb, Isolina (incorrectly recorded as Selina), Henry, Agnes and grandson Ernest (eldest surviving son of William Tate, Sir Henry's eldest son). His niece on his wife's side Jane Cattrall was also in the household as an assistant housekeeper. In 1881, the family, Henry, Jane and sons Caleb and George, were living at Highfield House in Much Woolton. Also living at the house were Henry's nieces (again on his wife's side) Jane Cattrall and Maria Wilcox (listed in the census as Marian Wilcox), and Jane Cattrall's future husband, Thomas Moore Dawson, a medical assistant.

After his wife died in 1883, Henry married for a second time, on 8 October 1885 at Christ Church, Lancaster Gate, Westminster London. Henry's new wife was Amy Fanny, daughter of Charles Hislop of Brixton Hill. In 1891, he and Amy were living at Park Hill in Streatham, London. Henry is described as a Sugar Refiner and Magistrate.

Henry Tate died on 5 Dec 1899 and is buried at West Norwood Cemetery in London, England.
