Virginia Bell Taunton was the daughter of Andrew Taunton and Crow Martha I.e Taunton. She was born in Tallapoosa County, Alabama.
In the 1880 U. S. Census (9 June 1880) [1] the family was in Andrew Jackson and Martha J. E. Taunton lived in New Site, Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Andrew Jackson Taunton was a farm laborer who could not read or write. Virginia B. was thirteen years old and could not be read or write. She had attended school during the 1880 census year. There were five other children in the family: Isaac H. age 17, Sarah C. age 10, James C. age 6, William P. age 4 and Linna J. age ten months.
Virginia Bell (Dolly) Taunton was married to James R. Foshee on July 17, 1885 in Tallapoosa County Alabama.[2] They were married by W. F. Foshee, Justice of the Peace.
In the 1900 U. S. Census (9 June 1900) [3] James and Virginia Foshee lived in Poplar Spring, Tallapoosa, Alabama. They had been married fourteen years and had five living children with one deceased. James was a farmer and owned the farm with no mortgage. The children included: Andrew J age 16, Martha B. age 6, twin daughters Ada and Ida age 4 and Prentice P. age eight months.
In the 1910 U. S. Census (April 20, 1910) [4] the family was still in Poplar Spring, Alabama. James was listed as "Jim R." and Virginia was listed as "Dollie". The record showed that they still had five children, but had apparently had another child during the decade who did not survive. It indicates they had a total of seven children. They had been married twenty-four years and James was still farming on his own account. The children included: (Martha) Bertie age 16, Ida and Ada were 13, and Prentice was 9. All of the children were attending school.
In the 1920 U. S. Census (January 19, 1920) [5] the family was still in Poplar Springs. James (J. R.) was 55 and farming and Dollie was 53. The only child at home was Prentis who was twenty years old and worked as a laborer on the home farm. James' parents were also living with them. His father John was 77 and his mother, Elizabeth, was listed as 91.
In the 1930 U. S. Census (April 3, 1930) [6] they remained in Poplar Springs, Alabama. There were no children in the household. Jim R. Foshee was 67 years old and still farming. The farm was valued at $1200. Dollie B. was 63 years old. Neither of them could read or write.
In the 1940 U. S. Census (April 12, 1940) [7] Jimmie R. Foshee and Virginia remained in Poplar Springs, Tallapoosa County, Alabama. He was still working as a laborer on his farm. He had completed third grade and Virginia had completed second grade.
Virginia died on December 23, 1952 at, the age of eighty-seven, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. [8] She was buried at Ephesus Cemetery in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Her name on the headstone is Dolly Bell Foshee. Her husband died the next year and they share a headstone. [9]
