With his parents he came and lived at Ramis, six miles from Carthage, Ill., in 1842; he was acquainted with the Prophet Joseph and passes through the mobbings incident to those days, having joined the church in early youth; he remembered the Patriarch Hyrum Smith preaching in his father's new barn.

He emigrated with his parents to Utah in 1850; in 1851 was called to fill a mission to San Bernardino, Cal., in Company with Elder Amasa Lyman and C.C. Rich; returned in 1857, and settled in Springville, Utah county; in 1870 removed to Levan, Juab county, and soon after was called to preside as Bishop for seven years; then moved to Juab and presided three [there] until about a year ago when he resigned on account of failing health. He came and lived in Salt Lake City during the summer of 1895, but removed in the fall to his old home at Juab, and went to work several weeks in the Manti Temple. His health continued to grow worse, and he told his family and friends that his stay would be short this them, for his suffering at times was severe.

Before passing away he called his family together and exhorted them to keep the faith. He desired to see his son James E. who was laboring as a missionary in England and President Woodruff kindly cabled President Lund to have him released; he reached home one week before his father's death. He gave full directions whom he wished to speak at at [sic] the funeral, also as to the horses that should convey the hearse and his family to his last resting place, all of which was strictly carried out.

April 28, at 11 a.m., the cortege left the family residence at Juab and at 1 p.m. they reached the Levan chapel where services were conducted by Stake President Paxman; Bishop N.P. Rasmussen, John and Susan Witbeck, Martin Taylor and Elder Paxman were the speakers; a telegram was read from presiding Bishop condoling with the family; all spoke in the highest terms of the deceased as being an upright man and of his integrity for the work of Christ. He filled every position with honor and credit. The funeral was the largest there has ever been in the county, eighty seven vehicles following to the cemetery. Many people were in attendance from Nephi besides all of Levan and Juab. Deceased leaves two wives, four sons and six daughters. [1]
