Colby was born in 1780 in Virginia, the son of Richard Taylor and Catherine Davis. [1][2]
He married first on 17 Jan 1801 to Sarah 'Sally' McGuire, a daughter of John McGuire. They had one daughter, Elizabeth 'Betsy' Taylor, b. abt. 1801-02 (mentioned in John McGuire's will). Sarah died about 1802-03, and Colby married second on 06 Dec 1803 at Winchester, Kentucky to Lucy Minor Taylor. [3] They had children: [4][5][6]
2. Alice Ann, b. abt. 1805
3. Hubbard Minor Harris, b. 09 Nov 1807, m. Catherine Elizabeth Taylor, d. 24 Dec 1883
Lucy Minor (Taylor) Taylor died in 1829 and Colby married third on 08 Aug 1832 at Winchester, Kentucky to Lucy Taylor Minor. [7] It is not known if they had any children.
In 1830, Colby appears to have had another man and wife with two sons residing with him and Lucy.
Colby resided with his son Hubbard in 1850 [8] and passed away on 10 Sep 1852 at Clark County, Kentucky. [9]
Research Notes
Two of Colby's wives can cause confusion because of their similar names and the fact that they are first cousins.
Lucy Minor Taylor was the daughter of Hubbard Taylor and Clarissa (Minor) Taylor. She was the mother of two children -- Alice Ann Taylor & Hubbard Minor Harris Taylor.
Lucy Taylor Minor, first cousin to Lucy Minor Taylor, was born in Spotsylvania and married Colby on 08 Aug 1832 at Clark County, Kentucky. She died on 17 May 1835 at Colbyville, Clark County, Kentucky. Her parents were Thomas Minor, Jr., brother of Clarissa Minor, and Elizabeth Taylor, sister of Hubbard Taylor. [10]
Both sets of parents -- Hubbard Taylor & Clarisa Minor and Thomas Minor, Jr. & Elizabeth Taylor -- were married one day apart in July 1782.
Hubbard's middle name, Minor, appears in his daughter Mary Reubenia's death record and reflects how close the Taylor and Minor families were long before Colby married Lucy Minor in 1832, when Hubbard was 24 years old.
