Research Notes

Robert and I have so many ancestors residences in common that we are planning a "Family visit" to all OUR states:
Bradfield/Puntenney in Ohio
Manis/Goode/Taylor/Lee in Missouri
Manis/Rimer/Delph in Tennessee
Bradfield/Puntenney-Taylor in California
Manis-Bradfield/Manis-Greer in Colorado

We were both born in California, he in Los Angles and me in Long Beach. His dad and he were raised in Missouri and my dad and his dad were born in Missouri. Robert spent 20 years in the Navy and so did my brother-in-law and sister. His Great grandparents lived/died in Ohio and so are mine. One of his great grampas was born in Illinois and my grampa Puntenney was born in Illinois. And THEN the biggest connection...our great gramma MANIS's were sisters and after moving to different states are now BOTH buried in Colorado, where I am now living.....Cuz' Carole Taylor related from Grampa Albert Lofton Manis/Martha Rimer and their daughters. Adeline Manis-Greer and Easter Manis-Bradfield John Bradfield to link to the Manis family...

Hello Carole,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing a check-in. The Project operates in a team structure with these participant PIP Teams -- The Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and three Biography Teams. There is also the Voyage Team which guides new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team.

You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team, working on profiles from your watchlist and other profiles that interest you. The other two Biography Teams work on Abandoned and Popular profiles from the provided lists. Please let us know if you are content with your current Team or would like to change to one of the others.

If you have not already done so, we invite you to join the email GoogleGroup and text chat Discord channel for our project. (You will need your Wiki ID for both). Neither is required; we also use the Profile_Improvement tag in G2G for Project announcements.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project meet its goals. We would like to hear about the successes you’ve had and would also appreciate any feedback you have to help improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or via private message to one of us.

I just add as much as I can with the sources that my research finds. I try really hard to place the data in time line order and match however the managers have the bios started, if any. If it is just a sources profile then it is up to us to add the bios the way the guide suggests.

Thank you

Carole,

It looks like you have uploaded some wonderful images that do not depict private subjects, but cannot be viewed by other members or site visitors because they are attached only to your private profile.

For example, Category: Underground Railroad Stations has an image description for a photo of a house in Ohio that was an Underground Railroad Station, but when I view the category page, the image box is big blank. At https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Taylor-25258-20 I can see a very tiny version of the image, plus a message that "This image is privacy protected. Only the thumbnail is open. To view the full image and its details you need to be in the Trusted List of someone or something tagged in the photo. If you're a family member: Request to join the Trusted List for Carole Taylor."

To allow other people to see that image without being on the Trusted List of your profile, the image needs to be connected to an additional profile -- one that is not set as private. For example, you could make a free-space page called "Underground Railroad Images" (use the link https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?action=newspace to start the page) then add the name of that page to the list of "People & Things in the Image" on https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Taylor-25258-20 . That would allow the rest of us to see the image when we visit the category page.

I looked at other image pages for images you uploaded (for example https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Taylor-25258-19 ) and I cannot see more than a tiny thumbnail for any of them. I can't tell for sure, but I think that only few (if any) of those images might need to be private. If you want other people to see those images, those images also need to be connected to at least one non-private profile.

Thank you, I have asked before what I need to do to OPEN the pics and this is the first answer.

now I am confused because you said like the free space, but that is on all the profiles I have done for it. I will look for the People & Things.... and add them to at least 1 profile and then I can delete them from me right?

posted by Carole Taylor
Yes, put at least one Open or Public profile in the People & Things section on each image page.

But I suggest that you NOT remove the images from your page. Keep them on your page for now, just in case something goes wrong in adding them to other pages (such as a typo in the name of the other profile, or another profile manager who doesn't like the image).

Carole,

How does William Gibson fit into your tree? He is my paternal 3rd great grandfather. I have looked for several years just to fit him into a family and he could fit into many families. But he is not listed in any I've found. I have a 4th cousin DNA that should help, But Ancestry is saying the match is maternal. My maternal is pretty full at that point. From a dc a great granddaughter said his name was George so I've been looking there too. A couple families have a George so now I'm looking into that. I have no male Gibsons to test nor 1st or 2md cousins so it is tough. except this 4th cousin 1R and endogamy. Fun but frustrating. If I could figure if he were Melungeon or not maybe it would help. I'm also Charlemayne, DAR, 1812, Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge, Colonial Dames, DUV, First Families of Twin Territories and FFofTN, I was working on Jamestown because there is a Thomas Gibson there when I decided to give it up and make William possibly George my focus. I've just turned 87 and resigned from all the societies. Sorry I chat too much. Again how are you be related to William? Probably through Taylor, Smith or Brown. Do you have a tree on Ancestry or 23andMe or a Gedmatch number? Thanks for listening. Kenny Ann Gibson Wood (My dad's name was Kenneth Gibson but I'm female)

Carole,

I noticed that you have created a number of profiles such as https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Turk-1286 where the birth and/or death dates are estimated. In that case you should use the Estimated Date Research Note Box -- see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Estimated_Date

posted by Kay (Sands) Knight
yes I try to add the wording on all profiles I do. but I do not understand why the profiles have to be so brightly tagged with that huge box?

Does the box take it to a working site where we can see the list for the Researchers to work on it? If it does that then I would understand but to what I have been instructed by my Mentor it is "suggested" and as you say "should" to use the box. I'm sorry but I don't think it is attractive to our profiles and the words are there. please understand. Thank you

posted by Carole Taylor
Carole,

The page for the template says "This Research Note Box should be used when a date is a rough estimate."

When you use the template that will add the applicable category to the profile. By adding the category the profile will then be found when members are looking for profiles that could use improvement or additional sources.

I also noticed that you were stating "birth/death are estimates based on the children" when using a marriage source.

posted by Kay (Sands) Knight
ok, from now on I will put the box in but do we really think we can fix all 152,417 that need Researching.........

I still think it is ugly but then I could not figure out how to make it go to a list like the 152,417 and you really want me to add to it. Thank you kindly, Carole

posted by Carole Taylor
Question? now that I have placed ten more boxes with this category why doesn't the number come down?

it is frustrating, I worked on these in the past and when the number does not go down why bother? It is just a number Person Profiles (152,417*)

Hi Carole,

I have an interest in Leadley information relating to the U.K. but these days I am adjusting to delving further around the world. I see you have a Joseph Leadley and wondering when/where he may have been born. On looking at records I've accumulated I have found a Joseph Leadley who was baptised on 10 May 1795 at Whitby. in Yorkshire, England. His parents were Lawrence and Eleanor. I found this entry on the IGI, but sadly there was no reference as to Eleanor's surname. I assume she may have come from another Parish. Hopefully this may be your answer, know English folk were looking for a new life from about that era. Rae Wilson ( nee Leadley )

I added you as manager. You can put his and any names on the Douglas County Colorado space page. You add them and I will add the frills after the names are up the entries up.

The page is privacy white (open) and you are manager now. I apologize for not working on it for a while.

Carole https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ogbourn-5 looks good. You have the stickers. on it. Everything is good. If you want to change your format, just start from here forward. I did not have trouble keeping track of anything.

Long ago we put the template above the Biography Header. NOW that is one of two things to make it project managed.

SO we now use stickers just as you did.

For it to be project managed, need the templlate above the line, and also need the project account added. So Far I do not have the one for Colorado. So let's stick with stickers

Thank you.

Thank you I printed this one... most of the articles about the people I am researching are 1859.. 1900s..

Besides, I visit the Douglas County Library often and the Historic Div Librarian years ago, I asked if I could use the newspaper articles on the wikitree site and she said yes, as long as I don't get paid or place it on a commercial site, as also the instructions state.

Our friends in the Wikipedia community recommend that contributors to the encyclopedia be bold. "In three words: Go for it," they say. Correct mistakes when you see them.

Changing what someone else has written often doesn't feel right. But it's what a wiki is all about. People are informed about changes through activity feeds and they can always change things back to the way they were if a mistake is made. These technological features of a wiki mean that changes don't need to be discussed in advance. The pace of collaboration can be faster than that. This is why, just like at Wikipedia, WikiTree encourages members to be bold.

This is why we have point III in the Honor Code that all Wiki Genealogists sign: "We know mistakes are inevitable. We don't want to be afraid to make them. We assume that mistakes are unintentional when others make them and ask for the same understanding."

That said, WikiTree collaborations are generally more personal than on Wikipedia. Most of us care deeply about our family history and our ancestors' profiles. We know that we don't own the profiles we manage but we do care deeply about them.

The WikiTree community should be friendly and communicative. We are a place for genealogists to work together.

We recommend contacting a Profile Manager before making significant or numerous changes to profiles they manage. It's a matter of practical courtesy. You don't want to offend the person if you're trying to work with them. You want to make clear that you respect them and appreciate what they have contributed.

Shawn Greer on 4 May 2022 James Greer Gun Powder Maryland

I see the comment that the American Greer DNA does not match the Greer and Grierson of Scotland. I descend from James Greer of gunpowder maryland. He is my 9th great grand father. Myself, my brother and nephew have been tested. I have been tested at the highest level on familytree DNA. I share DNA matches with Alpin Macgregor the historic Clan Chief and todays Clan Chief Malcolm Macgregor. I am 10 steps from todays chief but we do show up as a match. I have the SNP R-M123 which I believe is older than the M456 that I believe most Macgregors carry today. I also carry the gene R1b-L1335 which is very old. I'm still working on things but I believe we can now say that we come from a very old bloodline.

Hi Carole,

It’s time for our annual Ireland Project check-in! Please respond within the next two weeks to let me know:

  • If you are happy with the team you’re on or if you’d like to make a change. It is now required that all members with an Ireland project badge work on at least one of the project’s team(s), so if you’ve not yet signed up please do so in your reply to this check-in.
  • What you think the project is doing well, and what (if any) changes you would like to see us make? Are there any teams you would like to become more active in?
  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? If you would like to join us on either one, Just let us know in your response and we will get you signed up.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within two weeks, we will assume you are no longer interested in participating in the Ireland Project, and your badge will be removed. If you wish to reapply for membership later, we will be happy to have you back. Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely, Jen Hutton, on behalf of the Ireland Project

Hi Carole,

When we didn't hear from you we assumed you were no longer interested in being part of the project, and pulled your badge. I'm happy to reissue one for you, but you'll need to message me privately to let me know your email address, what team(s) you'd like to work on, and whether you would like an invitation to the google group, discord, or both.

Dear Carole,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing its first annual check-in with our project members. We are in the process of transitioning to a team structure. There will be three participant PIP Teams to start -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. There is also the Voyage Team who guide new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team. Please let us know which team(s) you would like to participate in.

For those of you who joined the Project before the Voyage started in late 2018, we would like to invite you to consider a "fast track" Voyage, especially if you plan to join the Biography Team. If you’re interested, choose a profile that you have completed to the best of your ability and compare it to the Voyage Biography Standards. If you’re at Level 2 or better, include a link to the profile in your response to this check-in for a “fast track” review.

We would also like to invite you to join the email GoogleGroup and text chat Discord channel for our project. (When you request to join our GoogleGroup, please be sure to include your Wiki ID). You will find more information on the GoogleGroup.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project and WikiTree. The Project’s mission is to:

Make profiles beautiful! We clean up messy biography sections and sources, and try to set standards for attractive, useful, and well-written biographies, starting with those we manage.

We know you’re working on profiles *smile* We would like to hear about successes you’ve had toward the Project’s goals. We would also appreciate any feedback you might have to help us improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or privately via private message to either of us.

Sincerely,

Debi Hoag and Robin Shaules Co-Leaders, Profile Improvement Project

Hi Carole, a couple of weeks ago I sent out a check-in for the US Civil War Project, this is just a quick reminder to let me know if you intend to remain in the Project. Hope to hear from you soon. I'll assume your not interested if I don't hear back from you by the end of February. Thank you.

Hi Carole! Hope this finds you well.

It's time for our annual Scotland Project check-in!

This year we are hoping to learn what our membership would like to accomplish over the next 12 months. In case you aren't aware, this year is WikiTree's ""Year of Connections"" and the Project's leadership would like to contribute to this in as many ways as possible.

We would appreciate it if you would share your thoughts and ideas with us on how we can accomplish this goal. We would also appreciate it if you would provide some feedback on our existing goals, including:

  • If you have not yet signed up to help on one of the project's teams, which team(s) would you be interested in joining?
  • How often should we provide a Project Newsletter?
  • Have you participated in the Tartan Trail? If not, is this something you'd be interested in doing?
  • Do you have a question(s) that we could add to a Frequently Asked Questions page?
  • Any suggestions or ideas you have on ways to improve the Scotland Project in general

We continue to communicate with our Project members via Google Group (official) and Discord (unofficial), as well as G2G. You may also reach out to any of the Project leaders via WikiTree's internal messaging system at any time.

Thank you for all you do to help the Scotland Project become a knowledge hub for Scottish genealogical research! We wish you all the best in 2022!

Sincerely, Amy Gilpin on behalf of the Scotland Project Leaders

oh my, no don't think I signed up for a Team? Tartan Trail? no, but yes sounds interesting. I will look into the Project category space and see what I can do. for the last year off/on I have been adding a Baltimore Maryland Parish Register, dated 1700-1850.. surprising how many profiles are unsourced............ so I just felt it needed to be done. I am almost 1/2 way thru the 1164 images. sorry it is not Scotland but I bet a lot of the people came from Scotland.

Hi Carole,

I just wanted to touch base with you and see if you have any questions about the Germany Project. Have you read the main Project page? Do you have any questions or suggestions? Most of the info you need will be linked to the main Project page here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Germany and I am always available to answer questions.

You have not yet joined our Google Group and you can ask questions there as well as on G2G. To join the Google Group, please click this link: https://groups.google.com/g/wikitreegermanroots and request to join.

Thanks also for being a long-time member of the Volga Germans (now a team under the Germany Project).

Hello,

I am checking in on behalf of the 1776 Project to announce the new project membership requirements and to verify that you are still interested in being a member of the project. All project members are being asked to join one of the project teams and also to make at least one project contribution every 6 months. We are also asking all project members to join the project's Google Group for project communications.

If you are interested in remaining with the Project, please reply to this comment or send me a message, request to join the Google Group, and let us know what team you would like to participate on.

We really appreciate your contributions on WikiTree, and thank you for all your hard work. If you have any questions, please ask. We would also love to hear any feedback you may have for the project.

If we don't hear back from you we will assume that you no longer wish to participate in the project and if so, you could rejoin at any time as is convenient for you.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Hi, I asked to join the google group "1776" and I am already on the military google group I get all the email daily.

I have been a member of 1776, since 2015. I am a DAR in Smoky Hill Trail chapter, Colorado. I would prefer to be on the TEAM: Profile Improvement, I think I can do best there. The Boston Tea Party is already on my desktop to make sure all persons are on wikitree.. As soon as I finish adding all ENTRIES of the St. John's Parish Joppa, Maryland 1700-1800 Register, 1164 images and I am on #451... A lot of them are Am Rev War... Taylor-25258

As part of a re-vitalization of the WikiTree US Presidents Project we are asking members if they are planning to continue their contributions to the project. We are establishing a page where everyone can identify the President or Vice President that they wish to manage. Just respond to this message to let me know 1) Are you planning to continue with the Project and 2) do you have a specific President or Vice President that you are interested in.
