Jasper Taylor-Jasper was one of the first settlers in Salina County Kansas and the last Civil War veteran in Salina to die. He enlisted in 1861 in the 18th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteers. He was wounded with a bullet in his left calf, gunshot in his abdomen, and bayoneted in his right hand. These wounds were received at the battle of Shiloh in Tennessee. Later in the war, Jasper was captured after having his skull fractured. He was part of a prisoner exchange and after recovering from his wounds assisted in the capture of Jefferson Davis. Jasper married Mrs. Clara Weatherly after Sarah died. The newspaper stated "Jasper is respected all and is a upright man," He married Clara because of his poor health and needed someone to look after him.
