When Mary Althea Taylor was born on September 7, 1858, in New York, her father, Isaac, was 43, and her mother, Sarah, was 34. She had seven brothers and six sisters. She died as a child on April 8, 1867.
Her death at the age of 8 was a tragic loss to Isaac. It was grief over the death of Mary that led him to spiritualism, desiring to keep in touch with his lost daughter.
