Biography

George Taylor was born in 1758 in Balvaird, near Abernethy, Perthshire, Scotland.

George (~33) married Mary Low (~23) (~1768 - 1850) in 1791 in Abernethy, Perthshire. Their children were:

  1. Robert Taylor (1791 - 1861)
  2. Isabella (Taylor) Hutcheson (~1794 - 1876)
  3. David Taylor (1796 - 1860)
  4. Christian (Taylor) Buist (1798 - 1895)
  5. George Taylor (1800 - 1826)
  6. John Taylor (~1802 - 1850)
  7. Mary (Taylor) Davidson (~1806 - 1868)
  8. Jean (Taylor) Alston (1807 - 1863).

George and Mary, and four children: three of his sons, and one daughter, emigrated to Tasmania on the Princess Charlotte, arriving in Hobart in January 1823.[1] Other family members followed later.

George Taylor received a grant of land about 30 miles south of Launceston on the Macquarie River. He named his property ‘Valley-Field’. Three of his sons, George, David, and Robert, received grants of land nearby.[2]

George died on 19 Apr 1828 in Campbell Town, Tasmania, Australia aged ~69.

Death notice in the Colonial Advocate, and Tasmanian Monthly Review and Register

On the 19th April, Mr. George Taylor, Settler, of Valley Field, Macquarie River, leaving a disconsolate widow and large family to bewail his loss. The deceased was the father of the young Gentleman, who formerly lost his life in taking a bushranger.[3]

George Taylor was buried in Kirklands Presbyterian Cemetery, Campbell Town, Northern Midlands Council, Tasmania, Australia with a death date of 19 April 1828.[4]

Research notes

Based on Scottish naming patterns[5]:

  • The family's first son was named after his paternal grandfather: Robert
  • The second son was named after his maternal grandfather: David
  • The third son was usually named after his father: George
  • The family's first daughter was named after her maternal grandmother: Isabella
  • The second daughter was named after the paternal grandmother: Christan
  • The third daughter of the family was named after her mother: Mary

The third son and third daughter are indeed named after their parents. It seems likely that George Taylor was the son of Robert Taylor and Christian and Mary Low was the daughter of David Low and Isabella.

Continuing:

  • The fourth son was named for his mother's mother's father: John: perhaps John was the father of Isabella, the mother of Mary Low
  • The fourth daughter was named for her father's father's mother: Jean: perhaps Jean was the mother of Robert Taylor who was the father of George

It is possible however that we are missing some of the children in the family and the sequence is thus not accurate.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
