OBITUARY. John Taylor, our York correspondent, writing under date of Tuesday evening, states : I regret having to report the death of our old friend Mr. John Taylor, which occurred here to-day, in the presence of the members his family. The deceased was one of the oldest and most respected colonists, having arrived here upwards of half a century ago. He leaves a large family, having been twice married, once to a daughter of the late Mr. Draper, of Beverley, sister of Mrs. George Glyde, sen., and subsequently to Miss Pyke, daughter of Mr. Joseph Pyke, of York. As the genial host of Yangedine, Mr. Taylor made a wide circle of friends, and as such he was looked upon as one of the most hospitable residents of the Eastern districts. Among his family are Messrs. J & J. Taylor, of the Williams, Mr. N. Taylor, of Beverley, Mrs. G. Glyde, junr., Mrs. F. Craig and Mrs W. Lowe, jun. A few years ago, owing to failing health, Mr. Taylor was compelled to relinquish active work, and he consequently sold to Mr. Darlot the Yangedine estate and went to live in York. A few months ago he injured his foot with a nail, which gave him a deal of trouble, and ultimately completely broke him down. Up to this morning he gradually became weaker, to such an extent that he peacefully passed away full of years and honor. The funeral has been fixed to take place to-morrow, with Masonic rites. DEATH NOTICE. WHEELER.—On August 8, at St. Vincent's Private Hospital, York, Thomas Wheeler, the dearly beloved husband of Rebecca Wheeler, in his 73rd year. A loving father, husband dear, / A heart most true and kind; / Into the bosom of our God, / He has gone, his rest to find. —Inserted by his sorrowing wife and family. The West Australian (Perth, WA : 1879 - 1954) Mon 14 Aug 1911, Page 1: http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/26348123 DEATH OF MR. THOMAS WHEELER. General regret was expressed on Tuesday afternoon at the news of the death of Mr. Thomas Wheeler, one of York's most respected and honored townsmen. The deceased gentleman contracted a severe cold some six weeks ago whilst visiting Balladong for the purpose of conducting Divine Service in connection with the Methodist Church at that centre. He was obliged to take to his bed shortly afterwards and although he rallied at times serious complications supervened, which resulted in death early on Tuesday afternoon at St. Vincent's Private Hospital. Mr. Wheeler was within a few months of his 73rd birthday, and up to the time of being seized with the illness which terminated fatally he led a very active and industrious life. He was a prominent member of the Methodist Church, and displayed a very keen interest in the welfare of the children, a large number of whom attended the funeral. The deceased arrived in Western Australia in 1889, and has since resided in York where he established a coach-building business widely known throughout the State. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, and prior to the interment in the Methodist portion of the cemetery a short yet impressive service was conducted at the Church, the Rev. Mr. Hammer, of Northam, officiating in the absence of the Rev. Tiller. Miss Olive Fleay presided at the organ, and the service throughout was most appropriate At the graveside the rev. gentleman also made some very feeling references to the life of the deceased. The funeral was largely attended. The chief mourners were — Mrs Wheeler (widow), Alma Wheeler and Mrs. G. Bell (daughters), Mrs. Gillies and Mr. N. Taylor (step-children), Messrs Bell and Gillies (sons-in-law), and other relatives. . . . MARRIAGE OF HER PARENTS. 7 Apr 1851, Saint Giles, Reading, Berkshire, England
DEATH OF HER FATHER: 11 Feb 1910, Greenhills, Western Australia, Australia
OBITUARY. DEATH OF MR JOSEPH PYKE. A RESIDENT OF OVER 50 YEARS. The death of a very old and respected resident of this district, Mr Joseph Pyke, occurred at Greenhills at two o'clock yesterday morning. Deceased had been ailing for some months back, but it was only a few weeks ago that alarming symptons set in, the cause being cancer in the throat. His condition gradually grew weaker every day, and his medical attendants soon realised that death was not very far distant. As stated above he passed quietly away yesterday morning, fully conscious, although unable to clearly give expression to his feelings, of his surroundings. Mr Pyke, who had just passed his 78th year, arrived at Fremantle in the ship "Shanghai" on the 9th of November, 1856, accompanied by his wife and two children. Almost immediately after his arrival in the State he came over the hills to York, where it might almost be said has resided ever since. His first wife predeceased him 17 years. For many years the deceased successfully conducted business operations in York, and subsequently identified himself with the life on the goldfields. He was prominent in all public matters, and prided himself in promoting the welfare of the town and district when the opportunity occurred. By the first marriage he leaves three children, viz., Mrs Thomas Wheeler, and Messrs S. and G. T. Pyke, and by the second two sons and one daughter—Vivian, Eric, and Edwin. The funeral is appointed to leave Wesley Church at 4 o'clock this afternoon.
