Biography
Jane was born in Kilconquhar Parish at Kincraig, and was the daughter of John Taylor and Janet Swinton. [1] [2] [3]
- John Taylor Kincraig & Janet Swinton his spouse had a daug.r born 24th Feb.y & Bap.t 8th March 1830 by Dr Ferrie Named Jane
She was also known as Jean Taylor. [4] [5]
When she reached her teens, Jane probably worked as an agricultural labourer, like her two elder sisters were in 1841. [6]
On the 11th of August 1849 at the age of 19, after being "regularly" proclaimed, Jean married Alexander Mackie in Carnbee Parish, who was labourer from Baldutho. [7] At the time of their marriage, she was pregnant with their first child, a daughter who was born in the following month on the 14th of September. [8]

In the 1851 census, she was living with her parents at Gillingshill, together with Alexander and their little daughter Jessie. Jane was recorded as Jean and Jessie was recorded as Janet. [5]
