John married Vi (Knospe) Taylor.
She had children from a previous marriage.
They had no children together.
John studied at the University of Minnesota, and was awarded a Bachelor's Degree in Forestry in 1939.

John served in the Coast Guard in World War II and the Korean War, serving in the Philippines and Hawaii and achieving the rank of Commander.
John worked as a forester in several places. In 1964 he was serving in such a capacity in Covelo, California. He ran for the office of Judge, there.

He passed away in 1964.

He was buried at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California.
