Biography

Complicated history, due to name changes, moving around country as they were navvy family building railways and docks. Baptism & Birth Portishead, Somerset gives parents as Elizabeth & George Taylor. 1881 Denbighshire census same name Taylor residing Pentre Issa Broughton, Wrexham 1891 Census same name rising Frodsham canal huts, Cheshire Around 1891/2 first child Annie born - still looking for her birth not on census. 1892 marriage to Thomas Searle (he could not sign name: might explain why next 2 children are a Surrell not Searle + accent may have influenced). However Emily gave her father’s name as William Burbridge. Emily registered her son in 1894 or nine Wrexham as Thomas Surrell and gave her former name as Taylor. Emily registered her next child Florence Louisa Surrell 1897 Rugby with her former name as being I have both certificates. Emily is not the only member of the family to switch between using the name Aylor and Burbridge, her mother and sister do too. However with the mother Elizabeth Churchill sometimes her spouse is recorded as George Taylor and sometimes he is recorded as William Burbridge. You would be excused for thinking a second relationship, but there is no consistency with dates. Emily’s sister Elizabeth Alice aka as Alice was born 9 May 1878 mother Elizabeth Churchill father William Burbridge but she is recorded as Taylor in 1881, then she used Burbridge when she got married 26 Dec 1898 to Joseph Beard. However in 1901 census they are living with her parents and her father is George Taylor again? Each census shows same place of birth and occupation. 14 Mar 1901 Emily registered birth of daughter Daisy Louisa Maud Silverton and her former name as Taylor. Emily didn’t actually marry Albert Edward Silverton until 17 Feb 1902 Emily died 14 July 1902 and no one in my family knew until 2017 when and where, because Albert Edward Silverton who was the informant registered her as Emily Surrell. When Emily died her sister ended up taking the children Tom and Florence to Dunfermline with their own children.

NB: I could not find a definite death for Thomas Searle or Surrell , and I doubt there would have been a divorce. Maybe Albert registered her as Surrell because it was a bigamous marriage, or maybe he didn’t want to pay for her to be buried. His family were not poor, most of them had pubs in Swansea, and he later did that too, after working on the Railway.
