Druscilla Amelia Taylor was the first born of father Ambrose Taylor (1849-1913) and Lavinia Penny Pike (1855-1951) of Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. The majority of residents of Newfoundland were fishermen and the Taylor and Pike families were such professions. The population was still sparse when Druscilla was born so many families had many children. Druscilla would have 8 siblings. She married George Elworthy on 30 Sep 1892 in Carrols Cove, Newfoundland. They had 4 children. Druscilla passed away at the age of 60 in 1931.

This was a time of political unrest in Newfoundland and the British colony voted against joining Canada in 1869 and became an independent dominion in 1907. Newfoundland remained a colony until acquiring dominion status on 26 September 1907. It successfully negotiated a trade agreement with the United States but the British government blocked it after objections from Canada. The Dominion of Newfoundland reached its golden age under Prime Minister Sir Robert Bond of the Liberal Party.
