Biography

Life Story Narrative

When Lemuel Taylor was born in February ,1846 in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, his father, Richard was 25 and his mother, Amelia Pike was 22. He had one son and five daughters with Melina Knight (Cooper). It appears that a daughter, Phoebe, died as an infant. No record could be found other than her birth. Melina Taylor must have died in 1888, again no records are available. The next available record of Lemuel Taylor shows that in 1889, Lemuel and new wife, Emily Williams, decided to move to Ha Ha Bay, Newfoundland. The area was wilderness located on the eastern shore at the northern tip of the island of Newfoundland. On this map it is located near the present town of St. Anthony.

This was a new wife for Lemuel. Ha Ha Bay was an unsettled area on the east end of the harbour located on the northern extremity of the Great Northern Penninsula. With his new wife and children from his marriage to Melina, he built a fishery, wharf and store. He died on 8 Dec 1928, in Raleigh, Newfoundland at the age of 83. Lemuel continued as a fisherman for his entire life.


Marriage

Lemuel Taylor married Melina Knight in 1874. Records of this marriage are elusive at this time. Melina Knight had first married Edward Cooper on 2 Jan 1870. They had 1 son, Selby Cooper before Edward passed away in 1872. Lemuel married Melina Cooper, a widower before 1875. Records show that Lemuel had a new wife in 1889 when the family moved to Ha Ha Bay.

John Allen Taylor born in 1875 is not the biological son of Lemuel Taylor and Melina Knight. He was born in Carrolls Cove, Labrador in the same year of their first childs birth-1875. However, family records show a John Taylor in the household from his birth. It would not be unusual to raise a child of a relative who had fallen upon hard or unusual times. If the records of a John Taylor, born to Lemuel Taylor, is uncovered let the profile manager know.

2nd Marriage

Lemuel Taylor married Emily Williams in 1888 when he was 43 years old. Emily was just 18 years old when she married Lemuel and had the charge of many children from a previous marriage. Then, the family moved to a wilderness area in which the nearest family was over 1 mile away. They had nothing and had to build a house, a lively-hood and a small farm to produce their own food. At this time, Emily also had 9 children of her own. Emily Williams 1870–1944.
