Biography

In 1851 the family is living at the Rectory in Burythrope, Yorkshire. Francis William is age 40, the Curate, born in Edmonton, Middlesex. Caroline Bella is also 40, born in Southampton. Their children Caroline Letitia, age 11; Francis Henry Wickham, age 9; Mason Dudley, age 8; Arthur Brooke, age 6; and Edward Alexander were born in Celon, East Indies (Ceylon, now Sri Lanka). Henrietta Althea is 8 months, having been born in Burythorpe after their return to England. Living with them were Mary Price, a Governess and Caroline Bella’s sister, age 27, born in Plymouth, Devon. Two servants lived with the family: Mary Ann Wilson, age 18, born in Kenneythorpe, Yorkshire and Elizabeth, age 13, born in Burythorpe Yorkshire.[1][2][3].

At the time of the 1861 Census Francis is no longer living with his family, who have moved to 101 Chapmans Lane, Waddington, Lincolnshire[4].

In 1878 Francis was a surgeon, living on St. Peter's Square in the town of Emsworth, which is described as being in the eastern and most populous part of Warblington parish, a small town, port and bathing place, 'pleasantly situated at the south-eastern point of Hampshire, 7 miles W. of Chichester . . .10 miles N.E. of Portsmouth' with a station on the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. . . The town overlooks the broad channel of that great inlet of the sea which separates Thorney and Hayling Islands from the mainland'[5]. In 2021, St Peter's Square is the centre of Emsworth, a paved triangle with trees and benches surrounded by brick and stucco two storey buildings[6]. Emsworth is the nearest large town to Thornley Island, where Francis' father was rector.

Francis is listed in the 1880 UK & Ireland, Medical Directories, 1845-1942, but his address is not listed[7].

In the 1881 Census Francis is described as a General Medical Practitioner lodging at 45 Nelson House in Warblington, Hampshire[8].

Francis died, age 44, at Havant, Hampshire, in Dec 1885[9].
