Biography

Mary’s birth is registered in the District of Malton, in the 4Q of 1853[1]. Mary Margaret Taylor was baptised on 27 Oct 1853 in Burythorpe, York, England[2] so she was born between Oct 1 and Oct 27, 1853. However, another record gives her baptism date as 2 Mar 1852[3].

The family was living at 101 Chapmans Lane, Waddington, Lincolnshire, at the time of the 1861 Census. Rev. Taylor is listed as age 45, the Curate of Harmston, born in Edmonton, Middlesex. Living with him are Caroline, his wife, born in Southhampton, Hampshire; Arthur, age 16, and Edward, age 15, both born in Ceylon; Henrietta Althea, age 10 and Mary, age 7, both born in Burythorpe. Also living with the family was Sarah Torville, age 20 born in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, a domestic servant. Daughter Caroline, and sons Francis and Mason were no longer living with the family at this time[4].

In 1881 the family is living at The Rectory, West Thorney in Sussex. Rev. Francis and Caroline are listed as both age 70. Mary Margaret, age 27 is unmarried. Malcolm H. Winter, 14 and Maud Taylor, 10, grandchildren are in the care of their mother’s family as Christopher and Caroline Winter prepare to emigrate to Canada. Emily Gumb, 25, a general domestic servant is also resident[5].

In 1885 Mary Margaret was living in 14, The College, Bromley. She cared for her mother, Caroline, who died in 22 November, 1885. Caroline's will was indexed on 19 Dec 1885, with an estate of 219 Pounds, 6 shillings. Her property was inherited by Mary Margaret, who was unmarried at the time[6].

At the time of the 1891 Census Mary, age 36, was visiting the Heaver household in Swainsthorpe, Norfolk. Thomas Heaver, age 51, a Clerk in Holy Orders, had his 3 daughters age 10, 11 and 12 as well as a nephew living with him. Mary and Rita H Keppel are visitors, and Jane Chase and Ellen Adams are servants[7].
