The family lived in Kane County, Illinois. [2] After Eveline died, they moved to Genoa, DeKalb, Illinois. [3] In 1961 Philander enlisted in the Union Army and served in the 52nd Illinois Infantry Company C. He lied about his age, claiming he was 44 rather than his actual age of 51 years. At the time of his enlistment, he lived in Dekalb, Dekalb, Illinois. He was 5' 7-3/4. He had a light complexion with sandy colored hair and blue eyes. [4] Philander lived with his son Josiah in 1870. [5] He died in 1877 and is buried in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield, Bremer County, Iowa. [6][7]
