Biography

Oral family history by two other children of Thomas Teare and Mary Barnum, Jessie Teare and Gertrude Teare, says there was a 15th child who was born in March 1884, a month before Mary Barnum died in April 1884, but the family couldn’t take care of the child after her mother died and the child was taken away. According to Jessie Teare's granddaughter, Ruth Blodgett Fisher Washburn, who heard about this child from oral family history, she doesn't remember any oral history as to the gender or name of the child. Ruth Washburn and another cousin Harley Teare have tried to find out what happened to the child but have been unable to.

Research notes

Mary Barnum (1840-1884) was my 2nd great-grandmother and I had been puzzled about whether or not she and her husband Thomas Teare (1835-1921) had a 15th child. The Barnum Family, 1350-1907 book says the couple had 14 children but Bruce Weir’s research of this family shows a 15th child.[1]

Harley and his wife said they saw evidence of this child's birth on 4 Mar 1884 in the Bothwell Library in Bothwell, Ontario, Canada years ago, but they didn’t make a copy of what they found and they have been unable to get back there. I have been unable to find a record online of the birth of a Teare child born in March 1884 in Ontario.

I was intrigued because in 1898, 14 years after Mary Barnum died, her husband married Sarah Chant Adrain/Adrian who had had a daughter named Ethel A. (A for Alberta) born on 8 Mar 1884 in Leeds County, Ontario which is quite a distance from where the Teares lived. The registration of Ethel Adrain’s birth was on 13 June1884 by Sarah Chant Adrian's sister-in-law. [2] Given that the registration happened 3 months after the child's birth, I don't know if the exact date of birth was accurate. This marriage in 1898 was about 8 years after Sarah Chant's husband died, although I cannot find a record of his death.

On the 1901 census there was a 17 year old daughter Ethel A. Tear, who was living with Thomas and Sarah Tear and who was born 4 Mar 1884. [3]

However, I think this may be Sarah’s child as she was living with Sarah in the 1891 census. [4]

It is possible that persons researching the Barnum family saw this 1901 census and thought the child Ethel A. Tear was the 15th child of Thomas Teare and Mary Barnum when she may well have been the daughter of Simeon and Sarah Chant Adrain/Adrian. Here is a commemorative marker of Ethel Adrain/Adrian with at least one and probably two of her sisters.[5]

I'd welcome further thoughts or sources on the birth and name of this 15th Teare child. Until such information is found, I am changing the name from Ethel Teare to Unknown Teare born in March 1884. Please contact me if you have further information or sources! Thanks! Lansing-1003 12:36, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
