Herman Tecklenburg, the son of Hermann Tecklenburg and his first wife, Anna Nagel, was born on 11 March 1841 at Buettel in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. 1,2 He was subsequently christened in the Evangelisch Church at Sankt Margarethen in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany on 8 April 1841. 3 Although Herman had spent his youth in the vicinity of Buettel, Germany, upon reaching the age of fifteen, he decided to leave home and go to sea. 4 In the Spring of 1861, after spending approximately five years as a seaman, his ship landed in San Francisco, California, and he chose to remain there. 4 For the next ten years Herman was engaged in boating in the San Francisco Bay area, hauling freight up the Sacramento River, as well as a few of its tributaries. 4,5
On 11 December 1869, Herman was married at San Francisco in San Francisco County, California to a woman named Margaretha Jurgens. 6 Margaretha, who had been born on 2 February 1846 at Sankt Margarethen in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, was subsequently christened in the Evangelisch Church at Sankt Margarethen on 27 February 1846. 3,7 She was the daughter of Hinrich Juergens (also written Juergens) and Metta Mohr. 3
It is said that when Margaretha emigrated to California from Germany, she grew tired of the voyage and convinced the ship's captain to let her off on the Atlantic coast of Panama. While the ship proceeded to sail around the southern tip of South America (Cape Horn), Margaretha walked across the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Coast, where she waited for the ship to pick her up again. 5,6,8
About a year after their marriage, Herman and Margaretha decided to move to San Joaquin County, California, where they settled in Elkhorn Township near Lodi. And, it is there that they spent the remainder of their lives. When they arrived there, they purchased a small farm consisting of 160 acres, upon which they produced hay, small grains, and grapes. 4
Herman Tecklenburg died at Lodi in San Joaquin County on 6 December 1922, while Margaretha died there on 20 November 1929. 7,9 Although Herman and Margaretha were both originally buried in the Woodbridge Masonic Cemetery at Woodbridge in San Joaquin County, California, their remains were subsequently re-interred in the Lodi Memorial Park and Cemetery at Lodi in San Joaquin County, California. 8,9
