Some descendants of Jonathan W Teel changed the spelling to Teele in the 19th century.

Family lore says that the last name in England was spelled different. It may have been Teale, Teal, Teall among others and that William Teel (1660–1723) changed it to Teel after arriving in America and all of his descendants should use Teel, however some descendants have changed the spelling. Many government sources have misspelled it. William was born in England and came to America after staying a short while in Ireland.
