Founder of Teeterville, Ontario
George was born in Grimsby, Lincoln County, Upper Canada a couple of years before the outbreak of the War of 1812.[1] By mid-century he had moved his family to Windham Township in Norfolk County.[2] In 1855, George purchased land on the 5th concession from Joseph Vivian. In 1859, he had the land surveyed and he laid out the Village of Teeterville. By 1861, he had built a grist mill, a sawmill and a home for his family. [3] In 1861, he was listed as a manufacturer. His three oldest sons are all still at home. William is listed as a manufacturer, while Henry is a farmer and Solomon is a miller.[4]
The village grew rapidly and within a decade had two churches, " a school, a town hall, a confectionary store, two general stores, two millinery shops, two shoe shops, a tin shop, two harness shops, three carriage shops, a wagon works, three blacksmiths, a foundry and cider mill, a tailor shop, a bakery, a butcher, a cabinet shop, a cooper shop, two carpenter and joiner shops, a drug store, two doctors, and a sash and door factory. There were three hotels" as well.[5]
George died suddenly in 1870 at the age of fifty-nine, felled by typhoid fever.[1] He was buried in the Teeterville Cemetery.[6][7] His sons carried on with the mills until 1886, when the family sold the enterprises to Henry McKnight.[3]
