Martin Teets was born in Appalachia, in Virginia (now West Virginia).
Native Virginian (Born in Virginia, Now West Virginia as of June 20, 1863)
Martin was born on 9 Jun 1830 to Jacob Teets and Mary Barbara Miller, likely in Preston County, Virginia. [1]
Martin Teets probably married Mary Ann Lance around 1850.
Martin and Mary came to Upshur County and bought a farm and built a home on Turkey Run after their marriage.[2]
Later Martin and Mary moved to the Talbott community in Barbour County. They again moved back to Upshur County to French Creek between Hinkleville and Hampton near the old covered bridge. Interestingly, Martin Teets' family was enumerated twice during the 1880 census, so likely moved during that period.[3][4]
Interestingly, Martin wrote his will on 6 March 1894, yet his gravestone gives a death date of 12 March 1892, which is obviously not possible. The gravestone appears to be more "modern" than the time period Martin died during, so it seems likely the date on the gravestone is incorrect.
Martin's will named 7 of his children: John C., Rena Cutright, Granville, Albro, Anthony, Mary Post and Sena Beer. It was probated on 31 March 1894, so he more likely died during that two to three week period.[5] Olive is the only child not named; it is likely that she had died prior to this.[6]
Martin is buried in the Hampton Cemetery in Buckhannon, WV [7] His wife, Mary "Polly" Teets is buried at the Lanham Cemetery at Queens West Virginia.[8]
