Helena was born in Cornwall, England, in 1848. Her birth was registered in St Austell in the 2nd quarter of the year. ' [1] She was baptised on 11 June 1848 in Roche. Her parents were Joseph, a miner, and his wife Mary. The family's residence was recorded as Hallue (sic). [2] Hallew (or Hallow) was a hamlet to the East of Roche, consisting of farms and the Hallew tin mine.[3]
When the 1851 Census was taken, Helena (now age 3 and recorded as Elena) was living with her parents Joseph (25) and Mary (20), and younger sister Mary Lucy (aged less than one) at Hallew near Roche. Also in the household was a lodger, Robert Grose. Both Joseph and his lodger were working as tin miners. presumably at the nearby Hallew mine.

Helena married James Trethewey in Charlestown on November 16th 1867 [6] (see Research Note regarding marriage record).
Helena and James had 6 children:
When the 1871 Census was taken James Trethewey (age 27), his wife Helen (sic) (age 22), and their daughter Ann (2), were living at 8 Albert Road, St Helier, Jersey, in the Channel Islands. James was a mason. They were living with another Trethewey family, namely William (26) and also a mason, his wife Susan (21) and their daughter Mary (5 weeks or months). [7][8][9]These are James's brother William and his wife Susan Bassett, who had married on the same day as James and Helena in Charlestown.
Helena and James emigrated to South Africa sometime between 1874, when their son William's birth was registered in Cornwall, and 1880, when their daughter Helena Maud was baptised in Capetown. It is probable that they emigrated before 1878 as no England birth registration has been found for son Richard.
Elena passed away on 31 July 1892 at the hospital in Kimberley, Cape Province, South Africa. She was 45. Her occupation in life had been as a dressmaker, and the death notice records that she left 'One plain gold ring'.[10] She is buried in Kimberley Gladstone Cemetery. Strangely, the date of death recorded in the gravestone is a day later than that of the death record, 1 August 1892. [11][12]
Birth registration is accessed via FreeBMD. No corresponding record in the GRO Index - possibly the name has been mistranscribed. This is unfortunate because it means one can't access the mother's maiden name. However, baptism and census records confirm Helena's parentage.
Marriage Record On the parish register Helena's forename has been recorded as 'Melinda'. The surname is clearly Tellam, although transcribers have struggled to read it, and the Free BMD transcript records it as 'Jekkem'. [citation needed] No other records have been found for a Melinda Tellam or Jekkem, despite searching with wildcards and as many other variants as possible (one record has been found for a Melinda Trethewey, but she died in 1861, aged 38, [13] and six years before this marriage took place. She appears to be the Melinda Nicholls Hawken who married Thomas Trethewy (bef.1818-) in St Austell in 1844,[14] and therefore can be discounted). However, for this 1867 marriage, the bride’s father’s details (Joseph, a miner) agree with that of this Helena Tellam, and it is not unknown for a parish priest to record a name incorrectly. Both bride and groom signed by mark, which may mean that they were not sufficiently literate to notice the error. Other evidence to support this being the marriage of Helena Tellam and James Trethewey is the fact that James and Helena's oldest daughter Annie's birth place is given, on an affidavit viewable on her profile, as Tregehan Mills, which is extremely close to Trenowah, the residence given for bride and groom. [15] In addition, the 1871 Census shows Helena and James living in Jersey with the William and Susan Trethewey who were married on the same day in Charlestown.
