Emily was born about 1853. She is the daughter of George Temperton and Ann Ardern.

Emily lived with her parents and siblings in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England and then Lymm, Cheshire, England.

In 1871 she was aged 18 and her occupation was recorded as Dressmaker Assistant.

At the age of 21 Emily emigrated from England to New Zealand with her parents and two siblings, traveling on the ship Sussex.^[2]

Emily married John Calvan in 1877.
