Frederick lived with his parents and siblings in Lincolnshire, England and then Cheshire, England.
At the age of 15 he emigrated from England to New Zealand with his parents and two siblings, travelling on board the Ship Sussex. The departed from London on 16 April 1874 and arrived into Port Chalmers on 17 July 1874.[2]
Fred married Mercy Webb in 1880. They had about 8 children; Eva Mercy, Leonard Ardern, Lillian, Elsie, Horace, Claude, Lewis Carter and Myrtle.
He passed away in 1936 at the age of 77.
Frederick was buried on 21 August 1936 in Auckland.[3]
