EE Census Full Reference Note

This template is loosely based on the full reference note format for census citations in Evidence Explained.

The template will accept many different citation elements, however a complete citation does not require (and should not use) all the available attributes.

Suggested vertical layouts that can be copy and pasted for use follow after the example; unused parameters should be deleted. Please see the table at the bottom of the page for a more complete list of available parameters with a basic definition of each.

parameters

Parameter Definition
agency Used when a different agency (i.e. not census bureau, etc.) conducted the census.
Example: Department of Aboriginal Affairs
censusid Usual name of the census.
Example: 1871 Census of Canada
code Soundex or Miracode
comp Compiler for derived materials such as databases
copy See Evidence Explained for appropriate usage.
credit Credit line – aka “the source of a source”
database Database Title
date Date of access for online material
Date of publication for print material
division Civil or geographic divisions such as townships,city wards, villages, parishes
ed or
district
Enumeration District
Preference is to give both name and number of relevant district and sub-district where applicable.
filmid Microfilm ID
format Format of the record: digital image, microfilm, manuscript
group Archival Record Group
house Household information. May include household id, family id, line numbers and other data to assist in identifying a specific entry.
Example: Household 27, Family 29, Lines 1-4
item Item of interest
May be used in place of person when referring to non-populations schedules or derivative records.
item-type Alternative to format
jurisdiction Jurisdiction (using j1 and j2 is suggested)
j1 Highest administrative jurisdiction
(i.e. state, province)
j2 Lower administrative jurisdiction
(i.e. county)
owner Alternative to repository for records in private collections
pages Page numbers (see also sheet)
person Person(s) of interest
(i.e. Which person are we researching that this record relates to?)
publication-place Place of publication
publisher Publisher of a compilation such as a Compact Disc
repo Name of the repository
repo-location Physical location of the repository
roll Archival microfilm roll number
schedule Name of the census schedule
section Usually used with non-population schedules
series Archive Series
sheet Sheet or Folio
subgroup Archival Sub-group number
title Title of publication, or microfilm
url online address where material was accessed
volume Archival Volume
web-author Author of the website consulted
website Name of the website consulted
year Alternative to date
