Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Agnes (Templeton) Taylor was a South Carolina colonist.

Agnes received a land grant in SC in 1772 for 100 acres, meaning she was over 16 years of age and not married.

She appears to have married Robert Taylor in Laurens County, SC. Information, based on family sources, indicates Robert died in 1806 and is buried in the Robert Templeton Cemetery in Laurens County, SC.

Per information in L. B. Templeton's book on Laurens County Templetons (page 2), on June 1784 Robert sold the 100 acres granted to Agnes.

On page 2 of L. B. Templeon's book for the Laurens County, SC, Templetons we find: “(1) In the office of the Probate Judge, Laurens County, S.C., we find one Robert Taylor listed as one of the legatees of William Taylor, Sr., in the final return of the estate of William Taylor, Sr., dated May 15, 1809. In this same return we find also: ‘—legatees of Agnes Taylor, deceased, $33.70 (paid).” The problem with this probate action is William Taylor Senior died in 1804 and his son Robert (Agnes' husband) died in 1806. Agnes did not die until sometime between 1830 and 1840 in Indiana. It may mean the legatees of Agnes were not paid until after her death and they were living in Indiana.

There are several entries for Agnes in the on line SC archives. (http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/)

Agnes moved to Indiana after the death of her husband, following her brothers Robert and John Templeton who had already moved to Indiana. She is recorded as arriving in 1806 in Brookville.

She is listed as Agnes Taylor in the 1820 Census living in Brookville, Franklin County, Indiana. A male age 10-16 is living with her and she is listed next to one of her sons Richard Taylor age 16-25 with his wife age 16-25. In the 1830 census she appears to be living with her son Richard who is now listed as 30-39 years of age and Agnes would most likely be the female age 70-79 listed in his household. They are listed as living in Franklin County, Indiana. By the 1840 Census Richard is listed as 40-49 years of age and still living in Franklin County, Indiana. The older female is no longer in his household. It would be presumed that Agnes passed away during the decade of the 1830s between the age of 75-83.

Some of the known children of Agnes are: David (1790-1845), Richard (1793-1866) and William (1797-1874).

She was probably originally buried in the Old Sims Cemetery, Franklin County, Indiana, and her grave moved to the New Fairfield Cemetery, Franklin County, Indiana, when the Sims Cemetery was covered with water.

A Further Y700 Tester who is a match to all testers from Robert, Sr. David, Sr. and James, Sr. lines. This takes this Templeton family back to its Irish origins and another as yet unnamed brother and the origins of this family line, to Portmuck Townland, Islandmagee, Northern Ireland. There are hundreds of DNA matches beyond YDNA in Islandmagee to the descendants of these Carolina Templetons.

Templeton-1617 and Templeton-875 appear to represent the same person because: These have identical data with birth date variant.

Jack,

I am not sure if I am reading you correctly. The Robert IV listed on this profile (1617) is the Robert Templeton of Laurens County, SC. I am not sure how the IV got tied to this Robert. Maybe we got the SC and N. Iredell Templetons mixed up in the mergers.

Agnes is the daughter of Robert Templeton, Sr. (c1728-1790/94) of Laurens Co, SC rather than Robert IV (Templeton-1105) of the N. Iredell Templetons

Ron, this and any other profile that you have created on WikiTree is not a "my profile"ownership and control of Profiles on WikiTree. This profile and Templeton-875 are currently being worked on (collaboratively) by the profile managers to try and find they are matches and if not what should be done with the profile that is not. Agnes Templeton-372 is the profile for Robert, Jr.'s daughter Agnes - her dates are way off from this profile and Agnes Templeton-875. The profile Managers for the two need to determine which of the two should not be attached, OR, if they are indeed the same Agnes merge them - Research needs to be done to verify both and citations added. If you look at the Templeton DNA chart you will see the Robert, Sr has a son, Robert, Jr. He moved to Indiana. "Nancy Agnes Templeton (4/6/1805-3/18/1867) was the daughter of the Robert Templeton of Laurens County, SC, who moved to Indiana." From Ron's email. The profile for this Agnes is Templeton-372. Mags

Templeton-1617 and Templeton-875 appear to represent the same person because: It seems to me these two are the same but with disputable birth and death dates. As neither of them has any records to go by...
Agnes 875 is not a match for this Agnes. which one is the right Agnes? Mags
