Mary Tenney was born in Bradford, Massachusetts, in 1769. She was the daughter of Thomas Tenney and Hannah Stickney. She married Moses Atwood, also of Bradford, on November 17, 1788. About three years after their marriage, the couple moved to Haverhill, Massachusetts, where her husband bought the Mansion House in 1791.
Her husband died in 1808, leaving her with nine children.

Mary Tenney (Polly, more often called Molly), born in Bradford, Massachusetts, 27 Apr., 1769, daughter of Deacon Thomas and Hannah (Stickney); married in Bradford, 17 Nov., 1788, Moses Atwood of Bradford. Residence, Haverhill, Mass., on the site now occupied by the high school building ; a merchant, afterwards manufactrued
shoes. He died 8 May, 1808, of consumption. "A man of energy, truth, and charity." She was a superior woman, and lived many years " to bless her children and adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour, and fell asleep 4 July, 1853." Burial in Pentucket cemetery.
