Samuel was born July 31, 1791in Newbury, Massachusetts, son of Deacon Samuel and Elizabeth Smith Tenney. According to the Tenney family genealogy, he was educated by his father and at the academy in Bradford, Massachusetts. He was a school teacher for a period of time and then manufactured combs and snuff at the family homestead in West Newbury.
Samuel served in the military during The War of 1812 and had risen to a rank of Major by the time he married in 1821. Around the same time, the newly incorporated town of West Newbury raised a regiment and Samuel was given command and the rank of Colonel. He also served as town constable and tax collector in 1823 and was a leading member of the church.
Samuel married Mary Little Poore on November 15, 1821 in West Newbury, Massachusetts. The couple had four children; Lydia Merrill, Mary Elizabeth, Abby Poore and Catharine Judith Poore. Unfortunately, Samuel died in the prime of his life on April 3, 1828 while Mary was pregnant with Catharine. Already having three young daughters to raise, Mary had to give the newborn to her sister and brother-in-law, Catharine Gerrish Poore and Otis Little who adopted and raised Catharine.
